The Orchestra
The Dutch Recorder Orchestra Praetorius is a music society comprising about 30 experienced recorder players under the leadership of conductor Norbert Kunst. The members play practically all kinds of recorder, from Gar-klein-Flötlein to sub contra bass. The ensemble could be thought of as a complete recorder (chamber) orchestra, but it can also sound like a church organ.
The Dutch Recorder Orchestra Praetorius strives to perform different works, which may not be composed specifically for the recorder. Daring, enthusiastic, virtuoso and expressive interpretations take the spotlight. Unlike most ensembles, Praetorius has a 4 plus an 8 foot orchestra (soprano + tenor, alto + bass, tenor + great bass, bass + contra bass). A multiplicity of tone colours is created by combining instruments from different registers. In addition - depending on the music to be performed - use is made of additional accompaniment, for example harp, guitar, piano, contra-bass, bass guitar or percussion. Besides works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, contemporary compositions make up an important part of the repertoire.
