DOOP! (BAPTISM!)
This year, Rembrandt’s 400th birthday is being celebrated throughout the Netherlands.
Recorder ensemble Praetorius, based in Leiden, is certainly not forgetting these
celebrations, with two projects based on Rembrandt’s life!
At the beginning of this year, the project “Nachtwacht!” was performed. This was a music theatre production in which the central theme was secular elements from Rembrandt’s time. “Doop!” (In English, baptism) is the sequel, where the accent lies on religious elements from seventeenth century baptism rituals.
Through music, song, dance and animation, “Doop!” will give an experience of baptism
rituals as they were performed in Rembrandt’s time, including the social tensions which
were prevalent during this era. The historical location will enhance this experience.
The basis of the production consists of music by Cornelis Schuyt and
Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, which will be performed by Praetorius on a consort of
renaissance recorders. As a contrast, a piece composed especially for this production
by Joost Kleppe will be performed. Choreography and dance will be performed by Leine & Roebana.
The performances begin at 21:00 so that the atmosphere of dusk can be seen through the windows and add to the experience. To get into the mood for the performance, everyone is welcome from 20:00 for drinks.
