March and Swing

The recorder may not be the first instrument one would connect with this interesting period in musical history. Although there were wind instruments present. The big band is an almost entirely wind-ensemble and Sousa's orchestra consisted solely of wind instruments. A large recorder orchestra can successfully mimic these two specific ensembles: giving the recorder player a treasure of a "new" repertoire. There are arrangements and adaptations of the music of Sousa, Berlin, Gershwin, and Ellington for all recorders in different sizes, particularly for the very large instruments. A new and different idiom, but a style which appeals greatly to the imagination.
