Rembrandt_Berouw_Petrus The theme of the Passion of Christ has been a source of inspiration for many artists. Luigi Tansillo (1510-1568) wrote a collection of dramatic and intense poems about the remorse of St. Peter for having denied Christ. Each poem shows a different emotional state of St. Peter. Orlando di Lasso made a musical translation of twenty of these "tears" in 1594 and added a Latin motet in which Christ hanging on the cross directly calls on us people to look upon his suffering, which which is, nevertheless, far less painful than mankind's ingratitude. All 21 motets have no less than seven voices, adding to the intensity as experienced by the audience.

Approximately one year earlier, in 1593, Leonhard Lechner put the Passion according to John's gospel to music. For this work he choose the more transparent simplicity of four voices. The year of Lechner's death, 1606, is the year of birth of Rembrandt van Rijn, who also received his inspiration from the Passion many times, like for this etch, called "The remorse of St. Peter".

Conducted by Norbert Kunst Lassus' Lagrime di San Pietro and Lechner's Johannes Passion will be interpreted by soprano Mary Hubell, altus Enico Kin-chi Luk, tenor Dick Valk and bass Richard Keen, together with the Praetorius Recorder Orchestra. A special consort of Renaissance recorders will be used for this performance. The sounds of Lassus and Lechner will be accompanied by a number of etches of Rembrandt portraying the Passion.
